Traveling Photo Exhibition: Women for Peace-Peace for All

With its launch at the UN House in Yerevan, the UNIFEM ‘traveling’ photo exhibition “Women for Peace – Peace for All” has started in the Southern Caucasus.

Devoted to the International Women’s Day, and shown with a national Art exhibition, the photo exhibition was opened by the UN Resident Coordinator in Armenia, Ms. Consuelo Vidal.

“We decided to join our efforts tonight and focus on women’s contribution to art and women’s contribution to peace building in the region,- said Ms. Vidal in her opening message, addressing UN staff, representatives of foreign embassies and diplomatic missions in Armenia, state officials, civil society representatives and mass media. “The main aim of this initiative is to unite the women of the region because their concerns and problems are the same,” she said.

The exhibition represents a compilation of 60 photos from three photographers in the region – Mr. Albert Babelyan from Armenia, Mr. Sanan Aleskerov from Azerbaijan and Ms. Natela Grigalashvili from Georgia.

After two weeks in Yerevan, the photo exhibition will be than displayed throughout the three countries of Southern Caucasus over the coming months.

To raise awareness among local populations in three countries about the lives and challenges shared by women in the region and to spread its message of “Women for Peace-Peace for All”, the UNIFEM-supported “Women for Peace” Regional Coalition have initiated showing the exhibition not only in three capitals – Yerevan, Tbilisi and Baku but also in regions of these three countries.

Under the flag of the Regional UNIFEM Project “Women for Conflict Prevention and Peace Building in the Southern Caucasus” and armed with the message “Women for Peace – Peace for All”, the traveling exhibition’ main goal is to demonstrate unity among Armenian, Azerbaijani and Georgian women striving for peace and sustainable development for their countries and their children.

A collage of black and white photos from Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia, the Regional Exhibition depicts women at work and at rest, with their families and within their communities. The photos illustrate the challenges, achievements and hopes which are commonly shared by all women of the Southern Caucasus.
