GenderIT en español: A brand new portal catalyses women’s voices in political sphere Exactly one year after the successful introduction of GenderIT.org - the gender and information and communication technology (ICT) Policy Monitor in English - the APC WNSP now presents GenderIT en español, the Spanish counterpart of the monitor with original resources and coverage in Spanish, as well as in Portuguese. Like it's English-language sister-site, www.genderit.org/esp pools resources regarding ICT policy from key areas of interest to women, such as violence against women, economic empowerment, decision-making and education. It features articles, resources, policy analysis, interviews, events and a who's who in the gender and ICT field. "It's quite a pioneer initiative, a space for women and women's organisations from Spanish-speaking countries to highlight their expertise and experiences in the field of gender and ICTs," comments Graciela Selaimen, long-time Brazilian ICT advocate and editor of the new Spanish version. GenderIT.org in Spanish is not only about making content available for women in the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking regions of the world. It also addresses the different priorities and issues for women in these regions, and makes sure that their perspectives and needs are not absent in global and regional ICT policy spaces. APC WNSP's Cheekay Cinco reflects on FOSS and women - share your opinion in GenderIT.org. FOSS has the potential to change the way women relate with ICTs, allowing for more control over the tools they use. As Users, women will have the freedom from steep licensing fees and the opportunity to influence software development to meet their needs. As developers, the open principle behind FOSS encourages a more collaborative environment, in which women may discover more freedom to create applications and solutions. However until women are recognised as equal partners, users and developers in FOSS, these potentials will remain at rest. Read the full article. Pushing and prodding, goading and hand-holding Reflection from the APC at the conclusion of the World Summit on the Information Society Did WSIS contribute to greater integration of
ICTs with development and social justice work? Did it generate new ideas
and partnerships for implementation of concrete activities? Did it
increase knowledge and capacity in ICTs among key development actors at
local level? Did it increase public awareness of the potential of ICTs for
development? Did WSIS set a precedent for a new kind of global public
policy process that is more open and inclusive? This
APC article explores these questions and more. (PDF) GEM Manual and CD now available off-line The Gender Evaluation Methodology for Internet and ICTs (GEM) is a step by step innovative gender analysis tool produced by APC’s Women’s Networking Support Programme (APC WNSP) for practitioners who share a commitment to gender equality and women's empowerment in ICTs. GEM provides a means for determining whether ICTs are really improving women's lives and gender relations as well as promoting positive change at the individual, institutional, community and broader social levels. Although GEM has been available on-line in different versions since it's inception, there has been demands to make an off-line production that united the how-to of GEM with insights and experiences of GEM for ICTs practitioners. The publication and CD are in English. Spanish and French translation will be available in March 2006. GEM is available online.
