Life Imprisonment - The Documentary

Domestic Violence is estimated to occur in every one in three homes but is a crime largely ignored by society. This film aims to give the silent victims hope and encourage them to seek help before it's too late.

We take a look at the lives of two former victims - Rekha and Narendar who were rehabilated by counselling. Today these women are counsellors in a social organization and play an important role in empowering the women of thier village.

Mahatma Gandhi was one of the first few men in India to talk about women's equality and freedom. As a result of his support many victims of domestic violence joined the freedom struggle. The film explores how relevant his concept of 'non -violence' is in dealing with domestic abuse in today's society.

'Life Imprisonment' delves into the causes of violence, the cycle of stages that the abuse forms and the physical and psychological effects on the victim, the abuser, thier children and the nation as a whole.

We look at the various options available to women like telephone counselling, shelter homes, family counselling cells and courts. Why do women still remain silent ? We view the long term solutions and the role of social organizations and the media in getting victims to seek help.

We speak to experts on this issue like Dr.V.Mohini Giri - Former Chairperson, National Commission for Women, Dr.Ranjana Kumari of the Centre for Social Research and Dr.Rajat Mitra of Swanchetan Society for Mental Health.

India is one of the few countries that has a legislation against violence in the home and we view the provisions of the The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act- 2005 that includes married, single women, mothers, daughters and widows in its purview.
