Promoting equality among indigenous peoples in the
Nordic Region will be on the agenda when the Nordic ministers of equality
meet in Tønsberg, Norway, this week. They will also discuss prostitution,
human trafficking, and company management from a gender
perspective.
Gender and power is the main theme of the Norwegian
Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers 2006 in the equality sphere.
The Secretary General has called for a joint project on leadership in the
Nordic Region from a gender perspective involving the Nordic Innovation
Centre and the Nordic Institute for Women's Studies and Gender
Research.
Other important themes include how to involve young
people in equality work and what initiatives are envisaged to put an end
to prostitution. The Secretary General has proposed studies of men's
attitudes to purchasing sex as a means of identifying potential measures
to reduce or counteract demand for sexual services and for trafficking.
The Secretary General envisages co-operation on these projects
between the equality ministers and the justice ministers. The ministers
will also take a decision on earmarking DKK 2 million next year for work
on the theme Indigenous Peoples and Gender.
