Oxfam - Gender and Development Journal - Gender-Based Violence Issue

Call for Articles

We are now in the planning process for the March 2007 issue of the
international journal, 'Gender and Development', which will focus on the
subject of Gender-Based Violence (GBV). I am looking for articles from
development workers and researchers who have practical experience to share
of addressing GBV in their work. This is, of course, a huge subject, and I
hope the issue will explore the problem in a range of contexts and
situations, exploring the different ways that diverse groups of people
experience GBV, and the range of responses it generates.

'Gender and Development' is an activist-oriented journal, published by
Oxfam GB. It is read ? and written ? by development policy makers,
researchers, and feminist activists, in over 90 countries. The journal aims
to share learning and insights from people who have experience of
development work and who are keen to share their insights with others. In
doing so, our primary aim is to support development work which promotes
gender equality and women's rights.

Articles on the GBV issue might address the following matters, among
others:

·     Case studies of programmes working on GBV: how change is made (and by
whom) and how impact is measured
·     Explorations of the legal aspect of GBV: the legal aid (or lack of)
available to those who are faced with GBV; developments of systems for
holding people accountable in different contexts (for example, the
public/private sphere, conflict situations, working with marginalized
people)
·     Discussions of how GBV intersects with other major issues, such as
HIV/AIDS, humanitarian responses, education, health, work and livelihoods
·     The challenges/successes in working on GBV with men
·     The differences/similarities in approaches from feminists needed to
address an issue so important on a global scale but which takes such
different local forms

If you have experience of any of the above, or other ideas on the GBV
theme, and would like to share your insights with your peers through
'Gender and Development', then please contact me, Kate Greany
kgreany@oxfam.org.uk with a short paragraph outlining your initial idea, as
soon as possible, and before the commissioning deadline: 5 June 2006.

Commissioned articles will need to be completed for a deadline of 31 August
2006. Please note, a core part of my role, as Editor, is to help you
produce your article. I have the time and energy for, and experience of,
supporting busy people and those whose first language is not English. We
particularly welcome contributions from first-time writers and will provide
the necessary support for them to share their development experiences
through the journal. Attached to this email is a copy of our Contributors'
Guidelines.

Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions.

Gender & Development is an essential resource for everyone working in development policy, practice, and research. Its aim is to promote, inspire, and support development policy and practice which furthers the goals of equality between women and men.

Each issue of Gender & Development focuses on a topic of key interest to all involved in promoting gender equality through development. An up-to-the minute overview of the topic is followed by a range of articles from researchers, academics, policy makers, and practitioners. Each issue includes an up-to-date resources section, listing publications, electronic resources, and organisations.

Building on the last 12 years of success, from 2006 the fully redesigned Gender & Development will include additional exciting new features:

• news and views on current events and trends in gender
equality and women’s rights
• interviews and debates on cutting-edge issues
• book reviews on the latest publications

Gender & Development is published as a thematic journal three times a year.

Praise for Gender & Development

Caroline Moser, Overseas Development Institute

Gender & Development gives me tremendous benefit in my job. Most of the developing country case studies are relevant and useful to the needs of our country. It has changed my attitude toward women’
