The release features the IGAD Heads of State Summit endorsement of the establishment of an annual IGAD Gender Peer Reivew Mechanism and the development of monitoring systems for the implementation of the IGAD Gender Policy. It also calls for inclusion of Women in IGAD Peace Monitoring.

IGAD - Intergovernmental Authority on Development - East Africa Seven Countries

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) is a regional grouping of seven Eastern African countries of Djibouti , Eritrea , Ethiopia , Kenya , Somalia and Uganda . It was created in 1986 by the Heads of State and Government of member states as the Intergovernmental Authority on Drought and Development (IGADD) following the recurrent and severe droughts and other natural disasters that caused widespread famine, ecological degradation and economic hardship in the Eastern Africa region between 1974 and 1984. IGAD has its Head Quarters in Djibouti , the Republic of Djibouti .

IGAD Gender Affairs Programme

As a crosscutting theme, Gender Affairs Pogramme aims at strengthening the role of women in IGAD priority areas. Major activities include:

Supporting formulation and implementation of gender policies
Mainstreaming of gender
Advocating for women’s economic empowerment and access to markets
Enhancing the role of women in peace making and conflict resolution
