In light of the ongoing negotiations
in New York on the establishment of a Human Rights Council,
information on the modalities of the sixty-second session of the
Commission on Human Rights is not posted on the website at this time
but will be made available as soon as possible.
For
information and reference purposes only, please consult the link to
the 61st session below.
The United Nations Commission on Human Rights
is the world’s foremost human rights forum. Established in 1946 to
weave the international legal fabric that protects our fundamental
rights and freedoms, its brief has expanded over time to allow it to
respond to the whole range of human rights problems. The Commission
continues to set standards to govern the conduct of States, but it
also acts as a forum where countries large and small,
non-governmental groups and human rights defenders from around the
world can voice their concerns.
The Commission meets annually in Geneva for six
weeks and is composed of 53 States members. Over 3,000 delegates
from member and observer States and from non-governmental
organizations participate. During its regular annual session, the
Commission adopts about a hundred resolutions, decisions and
Chairperson's statements on matters of relevance to individuals in
all regions and circumstances. It is assisted in this work by the
Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights, a
number of working groups and a network of individual experts,
representatives and rapporteurs mandated to report to it on specific
issues.

NGO Information and Coordination (NGOIC) –
Update 1
This message is to confirm that your response
to the NGOIC notice/questionnaire has been received. The reaction to
this initiative by civil society organizations around the world has
been very encouraging, with 205 responses having been received as of
14 February 2006, and more arriving every day. Accordingly, it has
been decided to extend the deadline for responses to 28 February
2006. But if you receive this email there is no need for you to
re-submit your data.
The responses already received are still in
the process of being analyzed in order to define the issues around
which the 'virtual interest groups' will be constructed, but we hope
to complete this process, and to launch the website ( www.ngoic.org), in the very near future. At that time you
will be given information about the modalities for using this new
online tool for enhancing NGO participation and coordination in the
context of the forthcoming sessions of the Commission on Human
Rights and its expected replacement, the Human Rights Council.
In the meantime, the negotiations in New York
on the establishment of the Human Rights Council are still
continuing, and many of the major issues are still, unfortunately,
unresolved. (Visit www.ReformtheUN.org for updates on the progress of these
negotiations.) This continuing uncertainty has major implications
for planning for the 62 nd (and last) session of the
Commission on Human Rights, currently scheduled to commence in only
3 weeks time on 13 March 2006. We still do not know whether the
Commission session will be a shorter procedural session for the
purpose of winding up the Commission's affairs, or whether it will
be the usual 6-week session with the same agenda as before. We will
send further information when we know anything more, or you can keep
checking on www.ohchr.org/english/bodies/chr/index.htm for news.
Thank you for your commitment to
participating in NGOIC, and to enhancing the quality and impact of
civil society participation in the international human rights
discourse.

Información
y Coordinación para las ONG
(ICONG/NGOIC)
site web ( www.ngoic.org
Koordinierungsmechanismus (NGOIC) – Informationsbrief 1
Diese Nachricht dient der Bestätigung, dass
Ihre Antwort auf die NGOIC Nachricht / Fragebogen eingegegangen ist.
Mit 205 Antworten bis zum 14. Februar 2006 ist der Rücklauf auf
diese Initiative ist sehr ermunternd. Und täglich werden es mehr. In
diesem Zusammenhang wurde entschieden, die Antwortfrist bis 28.
Februar 2006 zu verlängern. Unabhängig davon ist es für den
Verteilerkreis dieser Information nicht notwendig, Ihre
Informationen nochmals zu senden.
Zurzeit
Internetseite (www.ngoic.org)
ReformtheUN.org
Internetseite www.ohchr.org/english/bodies/chr/index.htm
verfolgen.
