Women in an Insecure World
"Women in an Insecure World" policy papers, book,
film and teaching materials
DCAF has published a number of papers on women and
security. In July 2005, DCAF published the book Women
in an Insecure World: Violence against women – facts, figures and
analysis (M. Vlachová and L. Biason (eds.), Geneva, 2005, ISBN
92-9222-028-4).
The book was launched in Geneva, Washington DC and
New York in late 2005, and will be launched in Alexandria, Brussels
and London, in early 2006. It is being widely disseminated as a key
resource in understanding and responding to violence against women,
and promoting women’s roles as security sector actors.
A 45-minute documentary will complement the Women
in an Insecure World book, showing in several portraits how women
and girls all over the world suffer from violence. As well as being
widely broadcast, the film will be distributed as a teaching tool,
and be used to develop other teaching resources.
Women and security sector reform
DCAF will continue to develop and promote policy
on women and security sector reform and governance.
Empowerment of women as security sector
actors
In 2004, DCAF organised the International
Conference Women Defending Peace, co-chaired by Suzanne Mubarak,
President of the Suzanne Mubarak Women's International Peace
Movement, and Micheline Calmy-Rey, Federal Councillor, Head of the
Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland. The conference
formed a Global Coalition – Women Defending Peace, of which DCAF is
a partner.
DCAF will continue to develop projects to:
-
increase the involvement of women parliamentarians in security
sector governance; and
-
increase acceptance within the security sector of the
importance of women’s full participation in security sector
governance, peacemaking, peacebuilding, and other security
processes.
Collaboration with other DCAF activities
DCAF will continue to explore ways in which the
"Women in an Insecure World" project can work with other DCAF
programmes to incorporate actions to end violence against women and
to empower women as security sector actors into their
activities.
One planned area of collaboration is between the
"Women and Children in an Insecure World" programme and DCAF’s
Border Guards projects, to address human
trafficking. |
