Romani Women Seminar

Source: www.jackfellows.com
Seminar in Brussels on 22nd February 2006-during this seminar seven Romani women from the Czech Republic, Poland and the Slovak Republic will present information about the situation in their homecountries.

The first session of the seminar will deal with the specific situation of Romani women in the Czech and Slovak Republics. Aware that racial discrimination always includes a gender dimension, we would like to focus particularly on the rights of Romani women. The discrimination Romani women are facing and the multiple levels of rights deprivation they undergo will be addressed during the seminar.

The presentation of Roma in the mainstream media will be discussed during the second session of the seminar. Not only the yellow press, but also state-run press organs broadcast articles and launch headlines which foster stereotypes, prejudices, and discrimination against the Roma. The Romani women will also present the variety of Romani media in their respective countries, their struggle for more sympathetic and balanced coverage of Romani people, issues, and culture, and how they are trying to increase fair representation of Romani voices in the media.
